MD PhD – Attending Neurologist

Luis Querol (Valencia, 1980) has a degree in Medicine from the University of Oviedo. He completed his residency in Neurology at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona.

In 2009 he was awarded a Rio-Hortega contract oriented in Neuroimmunology in the group of Dr. Isabel Illa where he developed his doctoral thesis on the role of autoantibodies in immune-mediated neuropathies. During the last year of Rio Hortega’s contract, in 2012, he worked as an associate researcher in the Department of Neurology at Yale University (USA) in the group of Dr Kevin O’Connor, where he carried out projects related to autoantibodies in multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis.

Directed by Dr. Illa, he completed his Doctorate in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2013 thanks to studies that identified antibodies with clinical utility in autoimmune neuropathies. In particular, it described anti-contactin-1 antibodies in a characteristic subgroup of patients with CIDP, in what is the first clinically useful marker detected in CIDP and the article that lays the foundations for the description of a new group of diseases, autoimmune nodopathies, in whose description our group has played a central role. Upon returning to the US, he continued working at the Neuromuscular Diseases Unit of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, where he combined clinical care, with a special interest in autoimmune pathology of the peripheral nervous system, with laboratory and translational research in the field about autoantibodies and immune-mediated neuropathies.

He is currently the principal investigator in the Autoimmune Neurology research line of the ERN-NMD of Neuromuscular Sant Pau, including the coordination of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit.
